The Rest Is Up to Her, by Petra Nykänen
From the series Not Everyone Sees the Same Cat
Black cat running across a streetway
It’s a bad omen, they say
In her lap, it’s a sign even worse
Almost like a warning, nearly a curse
And I have a feeling I can’t shake
The spell’s on me and I can’t escape
Hush now, she whispers in the cat’s ear
We’ve given her a reason to fear
She won’t know what’s coming next
But she now knows she’s hexed
Hush now, we’re only being fair
To warn her, so she’ll know to prepare
And I realize they must know
That I’m here, frozen like a stone
I look at the red moon
Dripping blood, like I will soon
No longer just an omen, but my fate
I take a step back, though it’s already late
The rest is up to her
